                               Repairing Incised and Degraded (Urbanized) Streams –                          Assessment, Techniques and Case Studies

    October 19th – 21st, 2016

                                           A 2-day Workshop to be held at Shasta College                                       includes Class and Field Practicum

        Instructors:

           John McCullah, Geomorphologist/Bioengineer, CPESC 

            Eric Berntsen, PH, CFM, CPESC, Habitat Restoration Hydrologist 

     Guest Speaker:

    Chris Hammersmark, Ph.D., P.E., Ecohydrologist, cbec, inc. ecoengineering

    Stillwater Creek, running thru the college, is a highly impacted salmonid stream that has been gravel mined, lined with tires and gabion baskets (circa 1979).  Now incised over    25-ft, Stillwater represents a typical “urbanized/hyrdomodified” stream system that will provide a living laboratory for developing repair and restoration strategies.


     

    Topics Covered:  Bioengineering and biotechnical Stabilization, Geomorphology, Redirective        vs. Resistive Methods, Thalweg Management, Hydromodification, Channel Evolution Model, Environmentally-Sensitive Channel and Bank Methods, Bank Full Discharge, OHWM, Self-Launching Rock Gradations.
